Recipe for Classic Australian Meat Pies

Recipe for Classic Australian Meat Pies

Ingredients:

  • 500g ground beef or minced meat
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef stock
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 sheets of puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Steps:

  1. Prepare the Filling:
    • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, sauté until softened.
    • Add ground beef and cook until browned. Break the meat into small pieces while cooking.
    • Sprinkle flour over the meat and stir well, allowing it to cook for about 1 minute.
    • Gradually add beef stock while stirring. Then add tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, salt, and pepper.
    • Let the mixture simmer until thickened, approximately 10-15 minutes. Set aside to cool.
  2. Prepare the Pastry:
    • Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
    • Roll out puff pastry sheets and cut them into circles to fit the base and top of your pie tins.
    • Line the pie tins with pastry, ensuring the edges are well-pressed.
  3. Assemble the Pies:
    • Fill the pastry cases with the cooled meat mixture, leaving space at the top for sealing.
    • Cover with a second pastry circle, pressing the edges to seal. Use a fork for a decorative crimp.
    • Brush the tops with egg wash for a golden finish.
  4. Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the pastry is golden and puffed.
  5. Serve:
    • Allow to cool slightly before removing from tins. Serve warm with tomato sauce or gravy.

Enjoy these delicious meat pies as a classic taste of Australia!
