Tim Tams are a famous Australian chocolate biscuit (cookie) treat, loved for their crunchy texture, creamy filling, and chocolate coating. Here’s how to make a homemade version:
Ingredients
For the Biscuits:
- 1 cup (125g) plain flour
- 1/4 cup (30g) cocoa powder
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 cup (115g) butter, softened
- 1/2 cup (100g) brown sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the Filling:
- 1/2 cup (60g) icing sugar (powdered sugar)
- 1/4 cup (60g) butter, softened
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the Chocolate Coating:
- 200g (7 oz) dark chocolate, melted
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil (optional, for smoother coating)
Instructions
1. Make the Biscuits:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and baking soda.
- In a separate bowl, beat the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla extract, then mix well.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix until a dough forms.
- Roll the dough out between two sheets of parchment paper to about 1/8-inch thickness.
- Cut into rectangles (about 2.5 x 5 cm or 1 x 2 inches). Place the rectangles on the baking sheet.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes or until firm. Allow the biscuits to cool completely.
2. Prepare the Filling:
- In a bowl, beat together the butter, icing sugar, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
- Spread a generous amount of filling onto one biscuit and sandwich with another biscuit.
3. Coat with Chocolate:
- Melt the chocolate and vegetable oil (if using) in a heatproof bowl over simmering water or in the microwave.
- Dip the biscuit sandwiches into the melted chocolate, coating them evenly.
- Place the coated biscuits on a wire rack to set the chocolate. You can chill them in the fridge to speed up the process.
Serving
Let the Tim Tams set for about an hour before enjoying them. You can store them in an airtight container for up to a week.
These homemade Tim Tams will taste just as delightful as the original Aussie treat!
