
Khabees (Traditional Emirati Sweet Dessert)
Khabees is a beloved Emirati dish with origins in the Gulf region. Made from roasted flour, sugar, and flavorful spices, it’s a comforting, rich, and slightly sweet treat often enjoyed for breakfast or on special occasions like Eid.
Ingredients
- 1 cup wheat flour (roasted until golden)
- 1/4 cup ghee (clarified butter)
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup chopped nuts (almonds or pistachios for garnish)
- 2 tablespoons rose water (optional)
- A pinch of saffron (optional, for added aroma and color)
Instructions
Step 1: Roast the Flour
- Heat a dry pan over medium heat and add the wheat flour.
- Roast the flour for 5–7 minutes, stirring continuously, until it turns a golden color and releases a nutty aroma. Be careful not to burn it. Set aside.
Step 2: Prepare the Syrup
- In a small saucepan, combine water and sugar. Bring it to a gentle simmer over medium heat until the sugar dissolves completely.
- Stir in ground cardamom, cinnamon, rose water, and saffron (if using). Let the syrup simmer for 2–3 minutes, then set aside.
Step 3: Cook the Khabees
- Heat ghee in a separate pan. Once melted, add the roasted flour and mix well until the flour absorbs the ghee and becomes a smooth paste.
- Gradually pour the prepared syrup into the flour mixture, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Cook for 2–3 minutes until the mixture thickens and pulls away from the sides of the pan.
Step 4: Garnish and Serve
- Transfer the Khabees to a serving plate. Garnish with chopped nuts for added texture and a luxurious finish.

- Serve Khabees warm or at room temperature.
