Recipe: Margherita Pizza – Classic Italian Style
Margherita pizza is a timeless favorite, known for its simplicity and delicious harmony of fresh ingredients. Here’s how to make it authentically at home.
Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- ¾ cup warm water (100–110°F or 37–43°C)
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
For the Toppings:
- 1 cup canned San Marzano tomatoes (or high-quality crushed tomatoes)
- 1 teaspoon olive oil (for the sauce)
- 1 clove garlic, minced (optional)
- 8 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
- Fresh basil leaves
- Olive oil for drizzling
- Salt to taste
Optional: A pinch of red pepper flakes or a sprinkle of parmesan for serving.
Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough:
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Create a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1–2 hours until it doubles in size.
2. Make the Sauce:
- Blend or crush the San Marzano tomatoes until smooth.
- In a small saucepan, heat 1 teaspoon olive oil and optionally sauté the minced garlic. Add the crushed tomatoes and simmer for 10 minutes. Season with salt.
3. Assemble the Pizza:
- Preheat your oven to its maximum temperature (usually 475–500°F / 245–260°C). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat.
- Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a thin, round shape.
- Transfer the dough to a pizza peel or baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Spread a thin layer of tomato sauce over the dough, leaving a small border for the crust.
- Distribute the mozzarella slices evenly over the sauce.
4. Bake the Pizza:
- Transfer the pizza onto the preheated stone or baking sheet. Bake for 7–10 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling and slightly browned.
5. Add Fresh Basil:
- Remove the pizza from the oven and immediately place fresh basil leaves on top. Drizzle with olive oil for extra flavor.
6. Serve and Enjoy:
Slice your Margherita pizza and serve it hot with a pinch of red pepper flakes or a sprinkle of parmesan if desired.
